The bigger the harem, the more its necessary for the participants to like each other. Without that it'll be chaos.

The sweet spot is about 5 to 6 girls who's characters and stories have been well developed, always hotter when there's a 3D personality attached to each girl

Even four, meaningfully unique characters, is pushing it a tiny bit, unless more than one writer is involved in the project.

I think that once you start having trouble remembering newer characters or telling them apart, it's too many. So, any more than 10 and you're swamped with names and characters

the sort of harems where if you have more than 1-2 partners per day and still cant get through them all... 7 max for me as then its one per day of the week minimum

It becomes a scaling problem with too many, keep it smaller you can develop the chars well as well as give player choices on who enters. Larger just more overhead, make them unique, consider interplay, and if you want to give choice on who enters, have to do scene variants etc.

I'd say 5-6 is enough. Of course I'd exepct some good quality character development. The overkill is when you forgot names of the girls you see less frequent in game, or situations where you can have ONS with multiple girls not forming real bonds.

WVM is a good example of the harem getting too big and character development suffering as a result.

I agree.. love WVM,but gotten hard (nudge nudge) to tell the girls apart.. and too many make it to unrealistic(not that having a harem is realistic,but when it's 20 girls, then it's just silly)

It depends on the context. But mostly i prefer 7 max.

I´d say absolute maximum, 10 girls. It leaves enough room to have girls that cover most likes or festishes. More than that can become very messy, and even be hard to remember every character between updates.
