How big of a harem is too big?

it depends on the dev. some games have 4-5 in the harem and it feels bloated due to poor implementations. others have such a huge roster that unless the writing is good noone is going to grind away past the 2-3 characters they are really after before getting bored

good character developement can help boost the size.
4-6 I'm fine with
but 10s to 30+ I'm sure has a place

Depends how much work the creator is willing to put in and how good of a writer they are. I used to think anything more than five or six was too many to have all their paths be meaningful, but - and I'm going to sound like a broken record here - Lessons in Love has made me a believer in the potential of such a huge cast. That said, it's such a depressing game that I can't help but think it might lose the harem tag when it's finally complete.

How can we say harem is too big ?
It's like saying that there are too many different varieties of movies, too many varieties of food, too many different video games, etc. We can't get tired of it! Even if we get tired we try to find different things and test new horizons... life is short, why restrain ourselves?

Double digits minimum but more than 20 and straight up getting lost

Good question! Harem or not, each girl must either have interesting character development or distinctive and attractive look

If it is just a straight sex game the more the merrier. But if it is a game with a story I prefer less so they can focus on character development.

Agree, At some point You'd sacrifice either design quality or the story itself.

I just started playing one that introduces like 20-30 characters to you at the beginning of the game and I can confidently say that it's too much. IDK if it's the number of girls or the sudden introduction that makes it bad but I can't remember anybody.

After 5 it gets ridicules mostly because it takes too much time to update each story line.

For a game? 4-5 is a good number. Balanced (insert Thanos meme here)
7 would be top limit. It would be a big game if ALL 7 members of the harem got a good number of scenes. Family at home has around this size.
10 is just too much. None of the characters get any development, nor they get original scenes, just repetitions of the same. Above 10, all the characters just blend in. Its hard to make so many distinct characters. This was my problem with my new family. Tons of characters, the same feeling on all of them, and the same looks (in the majority of them)

Depends on genre I guess. Small town. Anything past like 7 starts to get to big. Large scale probably somewhere in the 20s scale

Harems are pretty popular, but what is the right number of girls in a harem? Can it be too big? I think harems are too big when it feels like you have to choose between girls in the harem, or you only ever see a girl when you're having sex with her. I personally like WVM but I feel like it may be pushing that limit. How big is too big for you, and have you ever lost interest in a game because the harem got too big?
to me its game/dev dependent, and the point its too big, is the point at which the dev is struggling to get scenes out. for some devs thats only a handful of characters, for others, they can juggle a good 10-15. I'd get annoyed at bigger numbers only if the dev wasn't really giving anyone much content, or if everyone was too similar. beyond that, I say reach for the stars.
