How big of a harem is too big?

3 to 5 is ideal for story. Sandbox is 4 to 8, with the upper limits being where games get a little too bloated.

I tend to prefer smaller casts, because you can afford to spend more time with them rather than dumping another plotline to follow. It also gets to a point where the sense of time gets lost and shit stops making sense.

This seems just about right... plus with a smaller cast you're more likely to see higher quality threesomes etc... nothing worse than forced group scenes where the LIs focus 100% on the MC and almost don't even acknowledge each other because the cast is too big for anyone to build chemistry beforehand.

I swear I read that manhwa.
Anyway, at most 5 if every single girl is given some attention to their story. If more, the narrative just loses focus .

I’m with you, once girls start feeling like menu options instead of characters, the harem’s too big. Around 5-7 well-written love interests is my sweet spot, though WVM does make it work better than most.

More than 10, and you are out. Though one shouldn't confuse side-pieces and one time fucks as part of the harem

I suppose the limit is quite high as long as the characters look and behave differently. Grandma's House has a ton of characters but it has also been tolerable imo.
If the game is more sandboxy and has a map you get to explore on your own, I think those games can have more LIs than a game with no exploring. The map allows you to go meet whoever you want almost whenever which works for me.

more than 5 is too much, even that is a lot, 2 or 3 can make sense without some contrived magical reason.

There is no such thing as too much, diversity is key.
I don't care that much for all to have such deep development as long as the key characters get it.

In games I prefer like 3 or 4. Any more just causes the updates to take longer to come out because of the all the content that needs to be created with each character lol

Three is a good size, especially if the girls interact with each other. 4 works ,too.

Personally prefer 3-5, anything too much gets a little overwhelming and I start wondering "who is this?". Ironically though I do like the 100 girlfriends manga lol.

1 High Quality Woman > any harem

I don't really like harems, so any number greater than 2 is diminishing returns in my book. Only kind of harem I'd actually want is a mother and daughter, if that counts. But not mom + sister when it's incest.

As big as they want, as long as the author can make them all memorable and important, sort of like characters in a story.

as long as the members have a good backstory and they aren't just included randomly there should be no limit

I wouldn't give an exact number, but once you can't keep track of who's who it's too big. Or like in WVM where some aren't even given actual names. In that case colors based on what the wear. And that's like one of about 40 trillion problems with that game. Duckfaces, black boxes, never actually playing basketball, etc. I dropped that one long ago.

I'm not sure what the hard limit is, but I recall reading some manga about a dude building a harem of 100.
To the authors credit, it remained icteresting for probably the first 10 or so. I'd say the limit is somewhere around there, depending on the media.
Games where you can interact with your harem members might have a higher limit, assuming they have different personalities and such.

I like the harem games with tons of options, and you as the player being able to opt out from some paths if that character doesn't click. It can be annoying though if there's an overarching story that requires you to progress to a certain point with all the characters before being able to continue and to unlock further progression with the characters you like. I just end up skipping through so much dialogue and scenes when that happens.
