Actually it do change, just not based on the relative. HIS mother if is a son, HER mother if is a daughter, but I'm not that good in english to know the technical words.

Well, the main thing is to be understood, and you were alright.
It's only bad when the typo make it so the phrase has a whole new meaning, so it would convey the wrong message.
