The ones I like are Koikatsu and Honey Select 2. They can be modded to work with SteamVR.
I'm hoping that either the Quest 3 comes down in price or the Pico 5 is actually good. It's like looking though either binoculars or a screen door with some of these older headsets, or the hand tracking is just lacking overall. Maybe Deckard will be released sometime soon - ha!
So like with headsets wtf is the deal, why are we technologically regressing? Avegant glyph initially started pioneering laser retinal displays in 2014. The Pico Laser Projector that powers it, has been an existing technology since about 2010. Pico LRDs are a bit lower res vs todays stuff but here it is the principal that is the key take away.
Avegant has made some progress in creating projectors that can be "google glass" mounted to any pair of goggles/glasses. Sadly this update is only in terms of HUD/GUI not full VR projection and they have both discontinued and given up on the "micro mirror refraction LRD" system that was the glyph.
With tracking, while sure its nice to not have to "wear prehiprials" the cost of setting up your own ultrasonic batman dark night deep corpy state ultrasonic wiretap into your living room is fucking insanity which I refuse to partake in.
Besides, you get more "accurate" hand and digit tracking by cannibalizing several trackball mice into a DIY PowerGlove (Nintendo[R]) type system. Meaning, by using the 3x axis potentiometer inputs from the track ball mice to set up a "fiber tension" tracking system within a glove, you get like 80,000x the resolution of tracking data movement per cm per digit vs all tracking equip except for SONY's RFID tracking system in which you basically stick RFID chips to all your fingertips, your wrist and wherever else. The tracking device tracks the relative proportionate movement of the RFID chips in relation to itself within the room.
Anyway, the TLDR here is cuz like as one whos been keeping eye on this tech since 2014 and one who has training in mech+elect engineering, like if you are going to spend 5k USD on a VR set up, you can DIY some shit 10x better than Quest or Occulus just using a DIY powerglove set up + google glass type system (but DIY not google), for bout half that money.
So like wtf is the deal? why is the tech a) soo over priced & b) has 0 competition even tho Quest and occulus are like 15 YEARS behind in terms of tech each uses?
