Exploration, probably. It gives you the ability to implement an overworld with multiple locations to enter and investigate, which a straightforward VN, or even a Ren'Py sandbox game, wouldn't allow you. You can check behind trees, go into buildings and get instantly murked because your level's too low, find interesting ways to boost stats, suffer humiliating defeats and cathartic victories in combat, all things more difficult to do in other formats, which usually takes a good deal more effort, knowhow and time to code in other engines.

It being easier means there's more trash, sure, but it also means that when someone does it well (like with Claire's Quest) it rises far above similar efforts in other formats and engines.

Currently i am enthralled on kowloon high school chronicle, available on steam. A pretty interesting VN/dungeon crawler where during the day you pretend to be a japanese school student and at night exploring ruins under the school.

The absolute worst is when you find an RPGM with super juicy screenshots only to find that the screenshots only represent 0.001% of the content, and the rest is a super grindy and boring poorly made NES wannabe. So much disappointment and flaccidness...

Not really a fan of RGPM. I have no idea when AVN needs to presented in RGPM style. Click xn just to get some scenes.

But since i havent been playing AVN for long, why was it even one of the mainstream format in the first place?

Probably the old timers having something to remind them to his favorite games. Or they just have bad taste for the games genres

It's a good engine to make JRPG games for any beginner, but face the facts it's terrible for porn games.

Always was and I remember the very first few games made over 25 years ago.

as well as. It depends on the game. I played lewd games with a lame story and I clicked through the pages but I played games only for the story too.
