Does this remind anyone else of the old internet?

Ah the good old days. I remember when every computer tower was beige for some reason.
Do you remember 1200/2400 baud modems? Commodore VIC-20 modems, the introduction of 56k EGA video cards by IBM. I had an old Intel 80286 processor in an IBM PS2 computer with 4 MB of RAM and 20MB HD and the first series of VGA video cards. I thought I was on top of the world. That was before there were a lot of ISPs to dial into the internet. I remember having a list of different phone numbers to call into bulletin boards to access things like games and nude pictures. Oh, the good old days... Glad they are good old days... I would have lost interest years ago if it remained that slow. Compare my first computer and the 2400 baud dial-up to the 200 Mbps download speed I am usually able to get, the Ryzen 9 7900 with 32GIG of DDR5 RAM on an ASUS motherboard, a 1TB SSD plus 2TB SATA hard drives, topped off with the Radeon RX 6600 graphics card. (I know I need to upgrade my graphics card. It is behind the times.)

For me LC reminds me a bit of the "good old internet" because it isn't crammed full of ads or very censored. Now granted, I think there's a time and a place for censored, or at least moderated, discussion. However I do appreciate the more laissez-faire attitude here on LC because I think it encourages a broader range of discussions, or at least of the topics people will talk about.

I can't remember the last time I felt part of a community all trying to achieve a goal like this. As crazy as it is, I haven't been on a forum where everyone is talking positively in a long while. Most of my online interaction now sadly consists of conflict on Reddit. When and what online community was the last that you felt like this?
Don't know that I'd call it all positive

Forums were always better than social media. People coming together for a shared interest can have interesting discussions when the rules are somewhat lax. Get a control freak at the helm of a forum and it ruins the experience.

Reddit is full of complete idiots, freaks, psychopaths and generally all the lowlife of society of any country, so I don't go there, unless I have to (Google search results).
The last time I was (and still am) part of a positive community was on a forum with the same initials as the American tobacco agency, but with different meaning. That's where I learned the name of Skar3D's Riley - one of my favorite 3D girls and found tons of 3D videos with Sarah from "The last of us".

god reddit really is so conflict based its weird. since leaving, after the appocalypses i only visited a few time a a month and people are so hostile to each other even in just like normie ass game threads and shit.
that said i play a few of mmos so the feeling if ‘we are doing some
shit’ isnt totally gone for me, also helldivers 2 has been like that on steroids lol
You ever checked some random Instagram comment sections?

I haven't spent this much time online since I first discovered that Windows95 was actually better than its Microsoft predecessors (am I really that old?!). It was the first time that I had a pc that didn't crash every 5 minutes, or blue-screened whenever I tried to go online :ROFLMAO:
Win95 and Winamp were the best.

This reminds me of chatrooms from the mid to late 1990s for me.

It's oddly comforting.

I just hang on IRC and sites that don't let google and other search engines crawl their forums.

Nah, I used to be in forums back in the day, and the feeling of posting just for the sake of posting is not the same as the fluidity of conversations we had in those days.

No. Old internet had no crazy policing and maniacs constantly reporting sites they disagree with.
And even less tyrannical governments that want to put their hands into every single aspect of one's life.

People are also more prone to talk about their negative experience instead of positives. Most people like drama and actively seek it.

This will definitely age me, but this is like the old forum days on like ask jeeves and shit :P
