Yeah, when I played Minecraft, I’d always head out with a pickaxe to try and find a cave, stack up 99 blocks of stone, and stash them in my pocket—just the usual stuff everyone does.
Seriously, if someone is being influenced to the point where their personality and behavior are changing, they should consider seeking help; there is absolutely no shame in it. I underwent treatment for generalized anxiety with a psychiatrist, and it was the best thing I ever did. It changed my life.
I think it is up to the "user". Everything we do affects us. We are shaped by our experiences. Experiences open up new thoughts and ideas, and in the case of such extreme genres, yeah sure, it can facilitate desensitizing the subject to you, or normalize it. I like playing those games because I like the feeling of power; both by being powerful and by taking away others power. I can be honest about that. In real life, I know that all those actions would also affect others feelings and futures; which for me makes all of the difference.
The same way couples are into CNC, BDSM and all other kinks; this is just another kink. The most important part is to be clear and honest about it to yourself, and I also think it is healthy if you have someone else to discuss it with. Obviously this is very difficult from a legal standpoint for many of these games, which is why I am so glad that this forum exists.
