Do you prefer games with multiple choices that affect the story or a linear story where choices don't affect anything?

multiple choice, im a sucker for stats and minmaxing

without a doubt multiple choices or a branching story. really helps with the immersion and it feels like it's you who's playing the game.
Linear stories VN feel like watching a video/story about someone else
really agree with this one.
But its a pain if you want to unlock all of the scenes

I like in-game choices, but I don't care aout multiple paths. I usually play with playthrough and select the best path anyway. There are lots of good games and I'm a busy man. :)

Best for me - multiple choices, and i like difference patch: bad character, good character, neutral path, and what happens after some Endings - Epilogue with more than 10 minutes content

Choice-driven games offer a whole new level of immersion, right? There's nothing quite like shaping the story yourself and seeing the world react to your decisions. It makes you feel invested and truly part of the narrative.

I like choices but I don't like mutually exclusive content. So for me the best kind of system is "choose your own flavor" kind of choices. Where the events are mostly the same, and the choices just let me choose the way they play out, the vibe, the personality of the mc, optional kinks, and so on.

If choices don't matter why put them in the game at all? Give me choices that matter.

I prefer multiple choice with branches, but if there's to many branches it can feel a bit grindy to see all of the content.

Branching stories are always better, but if a game has branching paths (especially if its not just some binary path that merges later on) the game gets harder to make and usually gets abandoned or has an abrupt ending once dev realizes they're fucked. Only completed games I've seen with true branching paths have been 2D. Feel like this is gonna happen with defending lydia collier since dev keeps adding new paths and update time and content output is slowing.

Tragic.

I like VNs with multiple choices if the are actual changes with different scenarios (like Chasing Sunsets or Being a DIK) and not just skip the content

Definitely a fan of choices. However I don't want there to be so many choices that I have to play the game through more than twice to see all the content. That seems fussy, but a game is a huge turn-off if it has a million and one branching paths with separate content contained in each one.

If the storyline is good, I don't need multiple possibilities and paths that either get tangled up or usually lead back to the main arc

I do prefer to have choices affecting the whole storyline.
More replay value in that.

Choice matters, only if it's well done, there are choice matters games that make it bad and tedious instead of it being a fun thing

Linear is alright but I do like having multiple choice, just not too much because it does slow down progression.

Multiple choices that lead to one of three endings. A Bad End. A Normal Ending and a True Ending. If it has branching paths then that means more to keep track of and more CGs to make, but a more engaging gameplay experience. Or they can go the Mass Effect route and choose the ending you want at the very end.

Its really rare for choices to have a complete satisfying ending. Sometimes it is done excellently, typically very poorly, but the vast majority of choices that are in a game just means that you cut content for choice B and you lock yourself out of a plotline. I'm a completionist at heart, so while I would love a story tailored to my choices just give me a polished linear product.

Cake and eat it too answer, I like the choices, but with a mod to tell me the affects.
