Do you prefer games with multiple choices that affect the story or a linear story where choices don't affect anything?

I'm unsure which I like more but I definitely don't like games that give you choices that do absolutely nothing.
True that, Multiple choices games are good only IF the choices actually affect the games' story otherwise some developers put choices out there only for the sake of it and those choices really don't do anything.

Games with a choice are much more interesting if this choice changes something.

I prefer some choices to personalize the experience but not the kind that alters the story in a huge way. Small bits here and there is okay.

If there are choices, they better affect stuff. Otherwise you may as well make it a linear story without any choices. Nothing wrong with those after all.

Choices are fine and sometimes preferred, but only if they are meaningful and lead to an actual different path. I get really annoyed by choices that make no difference or even having to pick a choice when there is only 1 available.

I generally prefer fully linear or real sandbox games.
But not games whose choices deprive part of the content.

Up to a point. But when I play a game, I want to find all the content. So lots of different branches means lots of save file lines to keep track of. It can get complicated.

In the standard Renpy save file layout, I keep one main branch on the top row, and one on the bottom, and then I start new pages for each time those branches split.

It'd be much easier if you could make save folders, with folders within those folders, or something like that in order to keep a good structure.

So yeah, it's fun, but I also enjoy the simplicity of a linear story.

having loads of options spices up the game, but what I really can't stand is sandbox mode.(n)

depends on the game. if the mechanics of the game are understandable and you know what you have to do to achieve a specific result i like it.
but sadly in many games with choices its nearly impossible to predict where the choices will lead you down the road or what points you have to get to progress with a route/path of the game. in some cases the dialogue options are so simmilar that you cant even guess which choice will give you points for love/corruption or whatever.
in this cases i hate it and will quit playing if there is no ingame walkthrough or walkthrough mod available.

I prefer choices, but only if they make an impact on the endings.

I also like kinetic novels though, but only if the story is interesting or heartfelt enough. Currently I've really liked only 3 kinetic novels:
- Guilty Pleasure (had a few choices in the very beginning, but they seemed to have no impact and it seems like the dev decided to go the KN route instead of continuing the choices route, that's why I still count it as a KN)
- Nympho Tamer (writing is pretty bad, but I like how ridiculous it is)
- Say It Again (I really can't recommend this game enough for a kinetic novel)
