Visual Novels all the way. I feel like content in sandbox games are usually behind a boring grind of the same action before you unlock the next action and repeat.
I know most people prefer VN's but I like sandbox because its gives me some rest between content, and I get to choose which story to progress. Some are overly grindy though that is true
I like the idea of sandbox more than VN. I like the freedom to roam and explore. However in reality good sandbox games are few and far between whereas the VNs are pretty good. Anyone got a hedge they would like me to sit on?
i like some spacing in between scenes and some effort to reach the lewd scenes so they feel more rewarding. hence, i prefer sandboxes provided that theyre not too grindy. a good example is man of the house. in VNs i often end up skimming through dialogues as stories and dialogues have become far too generic.
For me sandbox games are superior, in theory at least, due to the added freedom of exploration and picking which routes to progress with. Unfortunately, the implementation of the above idea is seldom that good, with developers making them grindy to add artificial length to their game. 9.9 times out of 10, a short sandbox game would be better than a longer grindy one.
A good sandbox game imo can be better than a vn. But it really all has to make sense and fall into place. Settings and character locations that make sense based on previous dialogue and not just "this character in this spot every day". But that's so incredibly rare that vn is the correct choice.
Vn are just much easier to skip and skim the story for the exciting parts. That said I enjoy both games as long as the sandbox isnt a huge grindfest or arent very clear on possible directions and you miss out on scenes.
