Most (all?) "sandboxes" I've seen are just a series of VNs with repeated scenes and grind between them.

VN for 99%.
Sandbox games are usually fucked up with lots of unnecessary grind and bad plot design.

I think there are games where the sandbox helps gameplay. I hate RPGM combat so this is very rare but in games like Lust Harem there is a combat system I enjoy and even an option to skip it and just play the game as a VN which I think is the best of both worlds.

If it's done correctly sandbox elements can be fine in a game but from my experience there are very few games that have good sandbox and if there are any I can't really think of them right now. VN is my prefered way to play though.

VN for sure. Sandboxes it seems like by nature become predictable and bland.

Sandbox games are just too difficult to play one handed, or they should take that into account, vn for sure

VN in general. Sandbox when the game rewards lore time with good scenes and animations

Definitely prefer VN
I really think the sandbox style makes for better games but I think the issue is sandbox games end up with tons and tons of travel clicks, inventory issues etc. I don't like how on rails the story in VNs often are and how the story can be all over the place once you start getting more than 3 love interests.

vn unless the sandbox is well developped. Sandbox requires a lot more work for it to work.

Visual novel, sandbox can get to complicated and I play mostly to relax

Sandbox is okay if it isnt too grindy. But would lean more to VN most of the time

In theory, sandbox should be better, but in practice, most of the times it's story becomes inconsistent and all over the place. So my vote sure is for VN.
