personally I prefer to play a defined protagonist rather than having to create one. I never really insert myself as the protagonist

It's hard to align to a character that does things in the story line i don't like.

Only thing I care for if it’s a female protagonist not gonna wanna play

It can be but in the end it's a game so I still like to play as other people or perspectives

I picked the other option in the poll. There is only one kind of MC that will never align with me. The MC that is dumb as a bag of rocks or hammers if you prefer that saying. It's a huge turn-off and takes me out of the game. I have dropped many a game where the protagonist was so stupid. Many of those protagonists would stop breathing if it was not an automatic body response.

Yes, that's why I never could get into Rance games.

I'm the same as the op in the sense that i can't connect with female characters because I'm not female and the disconnected as well the understanding of both action and thought processes are difficult for me to follow, but I have always been a bit socially inept so it could be that also.

As for how I feel about personality traits I hate when the Protagonist leans into 1 characteristic way too heavily and when they are a bastard with no redeeming qualities.

Not difficult at all for me. I give MCs I don't want to identify myself with a random name. That is if you can name MC. If you can't it's not a problem from the beginning.

I don't find it difficult but I don't like it either. The right thing to do would be for the character to be as neutral as possible so that the players feel like the main character. Those are the games I enjoy the most.

No. I don't self-insert. The more different the protagonist is to myself, the more interesting they become. I want to hear the thoughts of someone different from me, not listen to my own thoughts.

i almost never put in the shoes of the MC or any character in games, there is very few games that give that impresion

Always play characters that align with myself but never given it much thought as to why

I will never play as a character who is a rapist, murderer, transsexual, homosexual, etc. These are my personal attitudes. If you enjoy violent scenes, you're welcome to them. Just don't think that everyone should enjoy it.

can't really play female protagonists, I don't feel represented

Somewhat. He can be morally grey on some subjects. But overall I think a nice mc is more enjoyable to play as, than a evil one. And I don't much prefer a dom mc or a super wimpy. Somewhere in the middle, and that I myself can get to chose how to develop him is the best gameplay for me, in regards to the mc.

Depends on what you consider "aligning". I like MCs that are my gender(male) and having some relatability can be a bonus, but if the MC were too much like me then the game would be very boring .

Honestly at times I prefer playing a character so far detached from me and how I act just as a different viewpoint or scenario. But it doesn't bother me either way.
