Do Animations improve a game?

I think that sometimes animations are not needed. Other times they are. If animations are done right they can improve a game greatly, but if done wrong they will ruin a game. So a game not having animations is not a deal breaker for me.

like others have said when they are good animations can really make a game, on the other hand when they are less than great it is at best distracting and at worst a reason for not playing the game. I also hate when a developer starts too add animations too a game that did not need it and doubles development time between releases

Animations are essential to really enjoy a game
A good animation that fits with some mechanic of the game really makes it stand out. Especially pixel art games

A game having animations is always better for me unless the animation is a clipping mess. I wish developers spent more time on them

I agree with most that it depends. A good story but bad animations can break the immersion.

Animations help a lot in making the game more alive. But a good story is more important.

Sometimes...it all depends if the animations fit with the story of the game because if they are randomly placed, it would feel off and might ruin the game for me

I'd rather have a really good story and no animations than no story and really good animations.

Yes, but only if they are good. there were a few games that made it worse though.

If it's a 3D game, I'll almost never play unless there are animations. That being said if it's the same koikatsu/honey select crap I've seen 1000 times before, the writing better be great else I'm out immediately.

For 2D stuff I'm more forgiving, not sure why, but good 2d porn doesn't need animation to me, although it is certainly a plus if it has it.

It should be said that a lot can be done with screen effects (shaking, fadeouts, and that kinda stuff) to make a static image more engaging without necessarily requiring animation though.

I prefer animations, and preferably not the ones that are just 2-3 rendered frames playing in loop.
I make an exception if there is really fun gameplay or an intriguing story, but having that animation tag is usually what gets me to try it in the first place.

Yes, if they are good animations.
But most of the time they are unfortunately not.
Animations are hard and require a lot of work.
Sometimes I would prefer that the author of the game did not waste time trying to also make animations, but focusing only on the contents.
This. Even when they are good they don't add that much for me anyway.

Animations typically take more time than they ever will be worth compared to simply adding another varation of an image with some motion inbetween. I don't need a full 24fps scene fully animated awkwardly when you can just have a few hand made frames which you swap through at times of your choosing.

I find that most games (but not all) that include animations, improve the gameplay and consequently the desire to remain with that game, looking forward to each update.
Looking for the "animations" tag in the genre, is one of my go-to seeks for any new game. Thumbs up to those dev's who include them.
For me it's not super important but I do appreciate it when you have some top notch animations

over use of it can kill the game for me content and timing are very important

Not required but a good animation really adds to the game, I personally love the render engine that Dumb Koala uses and I wish more games would make use of it. But if you're playing a game like Parental Love, there's no animations in that game (If I'm remembering right) but it's still an incredible game.

some games like Eon for example, live from the Animations. It is one of the Main aspects of the game. So it mostly depends on the game but, a good game should have decent animations these days.

Oui, absolument.
Pour moi, un bon jeu a aussi de très bonnes animations.

Yes very much so. Not completely necessary but when they have them its a nice touch!
