I find that most games (but not all) that include animations, improve the gameplay and consequently the desire to remain with that game, looking forward to each update.
Looking for the "animations" tag in the genre, is one of my go-to seeks for any new game. Thumbs up to those dev's who include them.
Yeah, animations improve a game though theyre not required to be considered a good game theyre only supplementary like one guy said animations cant make a bad game good. Take Visual Novels for example theyre static most of the time but some are still really good because they know when to show the art and integrate the dialogue into the story.

A good story is a must for me. I wouldn't mind a grainy or pixeled artstyle choice, but good animations would help in making the action more impactful. It doesn't even have to be fluid, as long as it is a complement to the story and/or gameplay.

Absolutely. But if the writing is good enough just still mages can carry it.

Sound also helps unless you just use repetitive stovk noise looped every few seconds for an entire minutes long scene.
