How does Private Internet Access stack up vs the others? Or pretty much the same?

i prefer to use Mullvad VPN

1 it dousn't need a contract,
2 it dousn't need any info about you the user
3, you can litterely decide how you want to pay it, even in the most private/anonomous of ways
4, they do not collect data
5 its cheap ( 5 euro a month)

I started using VPNs several years ago when the net neutrality discussion was getting really big and ended up going with PIA which I have been using for most of that time. They claim to keep no logs and I haven't experienced many issues with them aside from when a server is temporarily blocked, latency seems to vary quite a bit some days lately but that may be an issue with my setup more than their service. Some services, particularly hulu, can be difficult to stream on since they are fairly aggressive about blocking vpns but there are servers which are specifically for streaming through which typically work well enough.

I have never used any other payed VPNs, the only ones I'm really even aware of off hand are nord, surfshark, and proton but aside from the ads I don't know much about them. I'd like to hear about peoples good and bad experiences with different providers, as well as what people consider to be the most important things when selecting a provider.
I was like you. Started with PIA, but randomly met some guy who actually knew the owner of PIA who sold it off and warned me not to trust them. So I switched to Nord. But honestly couldn't say if they're any safer. 😂🤞

Nord does have many more features though. The variety of different types of connections (P2P specific, TOR based, etc) and quality of their software is much more comprehensive. I don't regret switching.

I'm also a fan of Mullvad for the same reasons. Mullvad is like a shining beacon in a sea of shit. I definitely trust them more than my ISP, which is realistically the most you can hope from your VPN provider.

i use proton never had an issue

From what I am told; Mulvad and Proton are currently the best ones and VPNs do have their purposes. I do not however think they can deliver on keeping your data safe and secure

From my limited understanding, all of the exit nodes now belong to the feds, or anyone not on the "approved" list of exit nodes. Exit nodes have always been the weak point, with the theory that so many people would make exit nodes that it would be impossible to legally charge anyone. Exit nodes expose the IP address of the content, and by design expose the user, and suddenly all of the wannabe exit nodes fell off. The feds now have easy access to every tor log, even without a warrant.

Tor on the inside is still fully encrypted to my knowledge, but not many browser communities are adept at using onion addressing or tor enabled browsers.

Interesting. I imagine intelligence services are doing this and keeping quiet, only looking for major terror threats? Much like in that move with Alan Turing "The Imitation Game".

I used to use PIA, until they got bought by China, I believe?
Now I use MullVAD and have done for a few years. Works perfectly for what I need it for. Someone else already recounted the positives earlier in the thread.

Do you guys use a VPN at all to visit sites like Lewdcorner?

How is it better? Couldnt the VPN people just give your info to whoever wanted it?

Could they? Technically yes. Will they? Probably not.
"Why should I buy drugs from a drug dealer, maybe they'll tell the police on me"
It's literally in their best interest not to give your info out... Well, a decent VPN at least. And an extra good VPN literally wont record anything...

Before the Utah NSA datacenter was built, I would probably agree with you. Now I fully believe the NSA and all the other groups just vacuum up every bit of the internet and catalog it, waiting for the day that the laws "catch up" to what people have done, just like in Canada where the new hate speech law will be RETROACTIVE and anyone can be charged with hate speech for old posts on social media. AI will filter through ever post and eventually unmask every user and then direct the feds which laws were violated.

I'm pretty sure a ranking system will be created to make sure the "right" people get prosecuted first.

i dont trust any vpn so i dont use it

my man is just raw dogging internet

RETROACTIVE

I can't imagine that's the case, because it's insane, but thank the founders for "no ex post facto law".

wikipedia says Canada has a section on it in their "charter of rights and freedoms".

I have tired some but landed on express. might change again. I try and keep it on the up. bc if my stuff was ever leaked I would be ok for keeping myself clean and not doing anything i shouldn't

Canada's Human Rights have been non-existent since the truckers tried to stop the vaxx mandates, and JT froze bank accounts.

Lots of articles can be found with the search for Canada Hate Speech Retroactive. An article from eurocanadians . ca comes up pretty quickly

Canada To Imprison Anyone Who Has EVER Posted ‘Hate Speech’ Online

The Trudeau regime has introduced an Orwellian new law called the Online Harms Bill C-63, which will give police the power to retroactively search the Internet for ‘hate speech’ violations and arrest offenders, even if the offence occurred before the law existed. This new bill is aimed at safeguarding the masses from so-called “hate speech”.

Look at what happened to the truckers protests where they froze bank accounts for protected speech under that charter and while they dont have a second ammendment equivalent they did take away millions of guns essentially illegally violating the ex post facto clause you refrenced earlier.

Ex post facto means they can't punish you for shit you already did when it was legal, not that they can't make shit illegal that you used to do.

I only used free VPN's, but my experience is that when i connect i can barely use internet, connection is so bad. Are paid VPN's better ?

If you aren't paying, you're the product. Normal VPNs are bad enough with selling data. No way free ones aren't. How else are they making their money?

And yeah, if you pay for a VPN, you'll actually get bandwidth. It's kind of their thing.

Since VPNs don't really do much in the way of cybersecurity and I don't really need to spoof my location I don't use em
