I was like you. Started with PIA, but randomly met some guy who actually knew the owner of PIA who sold it off and warned me not to trust them. So I switched to Nord. But honestly couldn't say if they're any safer.I started using VPNs several years ago when the net neutrality discussion was getting really big and ended up going with PIA which I have been using for most of that time. They claim to keep no logs and I haven't experienced many issues with them aside from when a server is temporarily blocked, latency seems to vary quite a bit some days lately but that may be an issue with my setup more than their service. Some services, particularly hulu, can be difficult to stream on since they are fairly aggressive about blocking vpns but there are servers which are specifically for streaming through which typically work well enough.
I have never used any other payed VPNs, the only ones I'm really even aware of off hand are nord, surfshark, and proton but aside from the ads I don't know much about them. I'd like to hear about peoples good and bad experiences with different providers, as well as what people consider to be the most important things when selecting a provider.
I'm also a fan of Mullvad for the same reasons. Mullvad is like a shining beacon in a sea of shit. I definitely trust them more than my ISP, which is realistically the most you can hope from your VPN provider.i prefer to use Mullvad VPN
1 it dousn't need a contract,
2 it dousn't need any info about you the user
3, you can litterely decide how you want to pay it, even in the most private/anonomous of ways
4, they do not collect data
5 its cheap ( 5 euro a month)

From my limited understanding, all of the exit nodes now belong to the feds, or anyone not on the "approved" list of exit nodes. Exit nodes have always been the weak point, with the theory that so many people would make exit nodes that it would be impossible to legally charge anyone. Exit nodes expose the IP address of the content, and by design expose the user, and suddenly all of the wannabe exit nodes fell off. The feds now have easy access to every tor log, even without a warrant.
Tor on the inside is still fully encrypted to my knowledge, but not many browser communities are adept at using onion addressing or tor enabled browsers.
How is it better? Couldnt the VPN people just give your info to whoever wanted it?
Before the Utah NSA datacenter was built, I would probably agree with you. Now I fully believe the NSA and all the other groups just vacuum up every bit of the internet and catalog it, waiting for the day that the laws "catch up" to what people have done, just like in Canada where the new hate speech law will be RETROACTIVE and anyone can be charged with hate speech for old posts on social media. AI will filter through ever post and eventually unmask every user and then direct the feds which laws were violated.Interesting. I imagine intelligence services are doing this and keeping quiet, only looking for major terror threats? Much like in that move with Alan Turing "The Imitation Game".

i dont trust any vpn so i dont use it
RETROACTIVE
Canada's Human Rights have been non-existent since the truckers tried to stop the vaxx mandates, and JT froze bank accounts.my man is just raw dogging internet
I can't imagine that's the case, because it's insane, but thank the founders for "no ex post facto law".
wikipedia says Canada has a section on it in their "charter of rights and freedoms".
Look at what happened to the truckers protests where they froze bank accounts for protected speech under that charter and while they dont have a second ammendment equivalent they did take away millions of guns essentially illegally violating the ex post facto clause you refrenced earlier.my man is just raw dogging internet

I only used free VPN's, but my experience is that when i connect i can barely use internet, connection is so bad. Are paid VPN's better ?
