As a player, I will support someone that is creating a story I like, whether they are new or established. Established devs deserve the support and new ones need support to show they have fans and people wanting them to continue and succeed. One reason many projects disappear is because no one will support them, even if they have good content. Just like the people who upvote r/new on Reddit, these supporters really help.
If you have any questions about a specific project/game, go talk on the Discord. Most people are going to be pretty honest in how the dev operates, both with updates and with community management and creator support.
On the developer side, it does take a huge amount of time and energy to put out a reliable product. Most of us don't make enough to make it our full-time job, so we have to go to work to make the bills until (we hope) the project takes off. If I didn't have this damned office job, I'd be on project #4 by now.
