Almost every game that I'm interested in has something happen to the developer, which leads to unexpected delays in the development. Their entire family suddenly starts dropping dead, they get all the illnesses known to mankind (and the ones which are still unknown) or something else happens (like lawsuits). Are developers that cursed or is it just a way to earn more money?

They're greedy leprechauns that's milking people.

First rule of gaming: never pre-order or buy early access / unfinished product
Second rule of gaming: follow 1st rule

Normal developers wouldn't beg for money. Unfortunately I've bought a couple of titles which got abandoned, or still 'wOrK iN pRoGrEsS' stage back in 2015, (they're all unfinished), regretting that decision😭😭😭🥺

Several reasons I imagine.
Lots of adult game devs are either small teams or solo devs, so if anything happens, the updates will get delayed massively. You will rarely hear about cases of this happening in bigger game studios, because it's frankly not important to let the public know their life circumstances.
But yeah, there might also be a case of trying to milk people for more money or devs lying because there's a different reason behind why the updates are slower, could be being burned out or losing interest completely.

Things do happen. Real life can be hell on me for a period of time and keep me from developing. I've got such a time coming up soon.

To keep it short and sweet, developers are people. Sometimes they do get sick. Sometimes shit does happen. There are also times a developer loses their drive or interest. It can take a long, long time to make a complete product, especially for a single individual.

Sometimes they get scared - depending on what they're making. Yes, sometimes, it's a money grab. A few dollars to someone in a poor part of the world can mean a whole lot. It's relatively easy to make something and put it out there.

Can't wait the fully autonomous independent AI game making company. Humans may and will fuck things up really often, ngl

All sorts of things happen. As an example - the developer of The Intoxicating Flavor got really seriously ill two years ago, but he didn't ask for money for treatment, although he was offered help. But he had to stop working on the project. Now he is back to normal and is returning to work on this game. Another option - the developers of Taffy Tales and Summertime Saga started to rebuild their games from scratch, I'll be honest, I have big doubts about the perspectives of these projects, but for a few more years (in my opinion - until 2029-30 years) they can earn money on them, and earn quite well.
What happened to the developer of Life Play - just nobody knows. He just disappeared.
And someone just dies, like Palmer (Double Homework). But a significant part of the projects do get their completion, so I wouldn't risk talking about some kind of curse (even in an ironic sense). May alone saw the completion of 8 projects I've been following. And I'm not tracking projects with pseudo-Japanese graphics, including HS and HS2.

Summertime Saga got such cute arts and incestious arcs, I'd love to see the finished version. ❤️

Game development takes a long time, and during that time, a developer often finds himself in at least one or two bad places.
Independent developers often abandon projects when their personal lives turn sour.
and there is Summertime Saga (i didn't know that he try to remake is game)

I feel that a lot of developers probably don't anticipate the workload needed for an entire game. They start out positive and then throughout it just becomes more of a burden. Especially if they don't actually get a lot of support.

Burnout & greed in combination with lying. That's probably most of them.

The developers do seem to be a very particularly unlucky bunch, if you believe them. I'm not saying that they don't go through some real life bullshit though, they do just like everyone else.

It's really hard to estimate how much you can work on a creative project

Lol. Being a Game Developer, along with my friend Cynist there, we usually have a lot on our plate. It's often a constant struggle with trying to please our IRL people for the sake of living while trying to please everyone online for the sake of getting out of our IRL situations. You win some, you lose some. Sadly, a lot of Developers make us look bad because all they wanted was money, not the joy of creating the stories that we all love. Which is why things get abandoned.

I know me and Cynist. We have a dream. We're going to continue to pursue our dreams, no matter how hard it get. If anyone deserves to be fully supported, it's Cynist. He's one of the good ones.

I wondered something similar. If you look up most dangerous jobs, it's not like cop, firefighter, etc it's like cab driver, convenience store, pizza delivery, etc. Should change it and make AVN dev #1.

Its a combination of bad luck and bad timing.

Certain dev, lets call him "W", was making a game about being a lovely proud father. Thing is, his country have heavy laws against that type of games.
Was a risky move, the same can happen if you make a porn game in germane for example.

This happens so often. It's sad, really. Huge plans for a sweeping saga with dozens branches... then they find out how much work is involved with all those branches, and just lose the will to finish. Hell, a lot of people don't realize, before starting, how much effort is needed for a story with NO branches... This is why I always suggest keeping it short and simple for a first venture.

I'd imagine a lot of devs probably burn out, and come up with excuses after to duck out.

I agree that it's a burning out. Lewd game devs don't earn almost anything, face huge critics and don't have any obligations.

I burn out quicker because I work alone/solo, it takes time to release a decent enough update that people might not enjoy... or will enjoy.

That's my opinion.
