Oh god, I just had a momentary flash of what the world would look like if 4chan became main stream social media.... That'd be... weird.

The whole point of it was anonymity. Trying to apply usernames and accounts and the like would kinda break what made the place 'popular' in the first place. That sort of Dr Jekyll/Mr. Hyde "no one knows who I am so I can be as vile as I want" thing.

You can also do that with an account that isn’t tied to real life. Just create a fake persona.

But yeah, I guess when you want to be as vile as possible, you wouldn’t want it tied to any account at all, fake or not.

Being vile is usually a momentary thing; most of the time, you just want to chill.

That also makes me wonder whether there are people on 4chan who are like that 24/7, without ever needing to cool off or switch back to a more “normal” social media persona.

Sure, it just means the replacement hasn't appeared yet, or if it already has, has not been anointed as the replacement.
Perhaps it will be a return to the more classical style of forum, or perhaps a chan type of deal, or perhaps something we cannot even comprehend.
Or maybe nothing will replace discord, and the enshittening of casual internet communication and communities will continue apace.
Side note, I've been calling my falcon for a while now, and I'm starting to think it cant hear me, that's probably not good right?

Discord was the replacement for Teamspeak. Imageboard, IRC, BBs, Blogs, Telnet etc.
we all had it. It was perfect. The old internet was such a better place, the farther ago you go. Not gatekeeping it anymore and making it mainstream was actually the beginning of it's downfall.

I’ve checked out 4chan, but the whole “assigning numbers to who’s who” thing is really confusing to me. How do you even know when someone’s replied to you? Is there any kind of notification system, or do you just have to manually check comments one by one to see if anyone replied to the exact comment you made? And do they store your ID number in cookies or something. So until you clear your browser history and cookies, you’re remembered as that same number you were assigned?

Personally, I prefer something in the middle. Social media where an email is enough, or sometimes not even needed, like some Booru sites if I remember correctly, where you can just make an account. One extreme is needing a phone number, and the other is not even being able to make an account at all.

That's funny, Reddit was for me confusing, after I sailed waters beyond the internet hate machine. But there are extensions like 4chanX to make monitoring way more comfortable. Which boards did you visit? Most of them are an empty husk of it's former self.
