One story I really like was, when we were canoeing in Finland for two weeks. Wonderful seas, rivers and flat rock islands. We had a route, marked where are points of interest, small towns with supplies, bigger towns with medical help, islands where it may be possible to raise our tents (flat rock island -> tents = bad combination), and general sightseeing spots. We packed out stuff. Lamps and oil, cooking utensils, tents, tools, and everything you normally would need for at least 3-4 days without starving.
We lost a bag to a stream on the first day. half our food supplies where there. No problem. In About 2 days we would reach anyway a spot where we could resupply. That spot, a small kiosk like hut, was shutdown already for years. Still no problem. We could reach the next town in about a day. Then a storm started in he same night. The wind pulled out a stake out of the ground and our tent tipped over. It was cold, it was wet and it was dark. But no problem. there are no bad conditions, but just bad preparedness. We were scouts, we were prepared good. So we rebuilt for the night.
The next morning we were hungry, still cold and sore like hell. We decided to rest for the day and regain some strenght. Don't forget, that every day we were caneoing for about 20km, which doesn't sound much, but for teenagers 14-16 years old it was tolling. We took out our last ration of bread, opened it and ate it. After the first bite it was obvious, that finnish industrial processed bread is terrible. How do these people live with bread like that, it smells like perfume and taste like rubber.
We ate it anyway. All of it. After all, we got no choice beside staying hungry. After an hour or so we started burping, like really loud and stinky burps. All of us. That damned bread. How can Fins eat this stuff regulary? So we wanted to grab some nutbars to wash away that smell and taste of that bread.
"How comes our lamp oil is already empty?" one said. He took out the empty bottle. It was still sealed, empty, but had a hole in it. The bread soaked all the lamp oil and now I started to make sense. This disgusting finnish bread was not disgusting by nature, but by us and our lamp oil. We 8 people ate 1kg bread filled with that lamp oil. Now the taste of the burps was familiar. It was clear as day, that's the taste and smell of unburned lamp oil.
On the same day we packed our stuff and reached another small town, where we consulted medical help. Nothing serious, but just disgusting burps and small tummy ache for about another day.
I envy you.

Oh I can somewhat relate to your canoeing story. We did go canoeing on the Rhone during a school trip in southern France. It was hot, exhausting and fucking awesome.
Not even ten minutes into the day the class clown cruiser capsized causing complete chaos among the other nearby crews. We then had to rescue several people and catch two of the watertight barrels containing our valuables. We also had a few boat races which was probaly the best thingwe did that day. Oh, and one dude was way to cool for sunscreen and a longsleeve shirt. He was unable to sit upright or lay on his back for two weeks. C'est la vie.
That lamp oil part is just nasty, wow. Nothing else to add.

Short one.
We hiked trough Germany and one the destination point we got a really cheap way to fly back home with Ryanair. There was this guy, we call him D., blonde long hair, wavey to curly, very introverted, talked rarely, but was a nice friend. Somehow he wasn't feeling very well the whole trip, so he just followd us along with some distance, lone wolf style, hair covering this whole face. We reach village, an older lady ready to meet us. "Oh how you're doing, come with me, eat and rest for the night here. Oh look this poor girl looks so tired back there".
D. didn't say a word. it didn't matter to him, what the old lady said. The next day, after a good night sleep in a barn full of hay we went on. There is this nice camping ground, we're booking a place for the night. The owner asks "What's wrong with that young lady, do you need some help, I got some medications here". D. didn't correct him. He just struggled.
This happened several times. D. was already feeling better, but was angry. The last day approached. We reached the airport, get ready for the check in. D. is missing his passport. Confusion. What do we do now? We reach out to the receptionist. He can't help us, but sees, that we aren't suspicious or ill mannered looking. After all the the amount of tickets, the time, and everything else adds up. Just this one passport is missing, parents already contacted. The clerk is unsure what to do. After some calls he said "it's okay, go through, the supervisor is okaying it" (Being a scout rules - you got trust in advance). So we can go on.
We can now put our stuff in that table to get it checked and everyone of us gets to the corresponding corridor to get a body check. So D., me and another guy stand in the row, where the man is doing the checks, and the girls on the other side, where a woman does the body checks. Now it was D.s turn to get checked. The woman calls him over "Lady, please come over here".
He snapped. "I'M NOT A GIRL!" Never we heard him this loud. Security (or police?) came over and asked whats the matter. The clerk from the reception rushing over to speak with the security and the woman on that body check stand to solve this issue. We were in no trouble and D. just got a lecture about manners from the security.
It was the worst possible moment for him to snap, but oh boy, he had to endure it for days after all.
D. was now a she, last time I saw her years ago.
