Wanting to force a change just screams that you care about an imagined version of this person rather than the actual person, and that isn't healthy for anyone.

Continue down this forceful road and you will most likely just destroy your relationship and negatively influence both of your lives.

Consider this: Are they aware of who you are, including your sexuality? (given that's your concern here) - If they are, and they accept you anyway, then they obviously care more about you than any "programming" already.

Let that blossom naturally and see where it leads. Trying to push something like this never ends well, at least in my experience.

So far I just tried to teach him to "live and let live" and have been pretty respectful of his beliefs. We do have a mentor/student relationship (I was literally his teacher at one point) so he comes to me for advice a lot.
Never have I given him the long "god is dead talk" or anything more like "dude, you do you, and let others do the same". But yeah, I feel you, probably should just leave him to his own devices and learn through experience.

Yeah, the second season, or prequel series has been bandied about a lot over the years. They did start publishing novels a number of years back, and they are fun, but not as rewarding as the show.
