We used a splitter one year. Someone had gotten about two foot thick rounds from a very old tree that ranged from about 40 inches to 60 inches across - we tried one of the smaller ones with mauls and wedges, but that took a minute.

It was a pretty recent fell, so still very heavy. I think we put four people on each round just to make sure no one got hurt loading it on the splitter. I'm starting to feel aches from over 40 years ago just thinking about it.

Yeah splitters can be pretty hetic, knotty bits of wood can snap at ya on them when they finally split. Beats banging at them with a blockbuster though if the bits tough. I cant say it was 40 years ago for me tho, more like 15-20 years. Even then, i remember the hard work like it was yesterday hahaha. Ahh and the sunburn with a hot summer.
