discussion Anti-Social & Lurker - Hideout spot

[Underlord]

The problem with todays social media is everyone is trying to sell you something now instead of just talking about things you like.

Would you like for me to like you for only 1 LC haha

[SJMagic]

Yeah, you're right. Internet as a whole became filled with monetization. Just like Member+ (Kidding, that was a joke, I totally understand why that was needed)

It's true however, and its what I miss about forums more than anything else. Forums were their own little hive community where people got together and talked about their interests. Now its all talk on my discord, use my Facebook group.

Other forms of social media are so fragmented that you don't have much in common it feels with others.

You're absolutely right. Unfortunately, I don't think we will ever go back to those times.

Nowadays, I don't think people even 'surf' the internet anymore. I'm not even sure that's a term younger people know. I remember thats how cool sites were discovered. I think there are still sites like that in the corners of the internet, but even searching things on Google is completely different from the past.

Algorithms curate everything for you, whether that's influenced by businesses, or etc...

I'm also led to believe the "dead internet theory" where half the internet is bots but that's a whole nother conversation.

[Bloodheart]

Yeah ashoka tano but only the animated version is cool haha

Yes bots .. especially now powered by AI GPT .. pollute the internet lots now.

But a lot of humans are posting crap too as they vie for "influencer" status.

And social media breaks the old forum model because it turns everything into one big ocean of undifferentiated "content" that is then mined to optimize "the feed algorithms" and feeding the AI bots.

This is how I am feeling right now

Ah, the greatness that is having to farm kudos once again because obviously, tedium or money, most people will just pay money.
Surprised to not be surprised.

In this context though, should we not be glad that many choose money?
Beats having to plaster adds all over the website to pay for the hosting.

As someone with background in finance, I can empathize with ever bloating budget more than I would like to. I just hope some stable state would be reached soon and feature bloat avoided.

Bots are just half the problem, what piss me off is the wannabe influencers or people that have single digit IQ yet feel the urge to flood the social media with crap.
now even reviews on restaurants are an issue, many times they leave one star review just because they did not make a reservation and the place was full or even worse they leave a one star review with something along the like of i did not eat there yet or i went there late and they told me the kitchen is closed, how dare they!
