Having a couple of friends that, being professionals, dissect every single comic board (had to google this one, hopefully it's the right word) we come across makes this kind of a second nature.

Yes, that was a genius move. Cartridges were the main source of income for Nintendo back then (and probably still is nowadays), and they did not want to depend on another media they had no rights on. They were so set in their ways that did not see the market changing in any way.
