Tis the law of unexpected consequences ( well unexpected by idiots) Sure -- get rid of inspectors -- they cost too much, get rid of environmental laws - that's industry interference, get rid of the CDC - they cost too much and so on and so on and so on. Then when a few thousand people die they say -- not our fault.

Airplanes are actually safer than many others ways of transport, it's just when an accident happen it kills many people at the same time, that's why there is necessity for increased security norms.

Well, yeah... kinda. Security norms have also been parially undercut in later years.

Imho, the equation has changed a bit since the FAA decided to let Boing self-certify their work, then a few airplanes dropped out of the sky over a rather short time period. Oops. You won't find me in a Boing 737 Max, not even if the tickets were free and I got paid for the trip.

But hey, at least all layoffs, downsizing, and work quotas raised so high that quality control became virtually impossible, meant that the the shareholders made a buck and the upper management could collect their yearly bonuses amirite...?

Yeah that's an obvious conflict of interest. My brother in law work in one of the companies that certify pieces conformity for Airbus. Fortunately, here, i should be done by independent people.

Yeah, when some of us were first engaging in these conversations, the ranks had different names, and P1-P4 didn't exist. It had just been VIP, which is now P1.

I was working in the 80s when the "Quality", with a capital "Q", craze started - We actually had whole sections of classwork making certain that we understood that quality was meeting NOT exceeding expectations. Tests asking questions like If the expectation is 90 widgets out of 100 are perfect what do you do if 95 of yours are ? The answer is not to improve to reach 100 - it's do nothing - you have met expectations. Expectations have been lowered in many cases of our lives but we are still "meeting" them so who cares.
