Same with me. I can pick few words up from TV/movies but usually i start with basic greetings and useful words like doctor, hotel and so on, then somehow it begins. Plus living in that country does help a lot. For me it does take time but the general every day greetings and learn their ABC are all helpful. Not sure there is a one fit all solution but dedication sure does come as a part. I just like the movies and comedy, and yes I do read subtitles, but USA humor is a mystery. Im convince most people dont understand or maybe think my humor is bit stupid, but there is the cultural problems. I also don't understand the USA humor most times but still its nice to watch sometimes.

So much of comedy is based on unspoken cultural assumptions that it often doesn't translate well. Even if you understand the language perfectly.

Like I have no idea how people are angling the faces. I just try to have fun with them and lucky for me people on here don't mind the garbage I produce.

Depending on the number of frames you may not need to do a lot. Just squish the face from the sides a bit every 1 or 2 frames to make it turn sideways and squish from top to make it turn up or down. Your brain does the rest while the animation is playing.

True story: When I was 18 and worked in a pizza store, the coolest pizza we ever made was a fresh handtossed dough, chili instead of pizza sauce, sliced hot dogs, cheddar, and onions. Fucking amazing

I played stuff at School, like Carmen Sandiego or Sim City. When I got a PC, it was basically Mist, Laura Bow, and whatever point and click adventure games my Dad could find, most of them were like 10-20 bucks each, really cheap. First OS at home was 98, then 98SE, most of my friends or classmates didn't have a PC for years, so I was basically the nerd.

Quick edit. Oregon Trail, also. That game fucked with me.

First OS i ever had at home was a Windows 3.1. In my family we had computer early because one uncle was a computer repairman, he gave us whatever computer his company send away after buying newer one. Without him, we wouldn't had computers because we were quite poor at this time.

How old are you guys? I've never heard of AOL. Or maybe it wasn't in my country.

Yes I agree. I actually find being in the country, talk with locals who don't understand Japanese and just be with their culture, was a huge thing for me. This also how I learned better English. I did learn some basic things from English shows and such but in those days I could not read any English. Even now I find many words confuse and read does help for sure, but there is USA and UK English, then Australia (I was those days in Australia for a while) the USA spelling and also writing style is often different, so, it does still take time, but even I return to Japan my English is get losing because no one in my area can talk English lol. Reading helps but only is people can read the letters. I do like Youtube. it does help me to hear and continue know what I already understand. Yes, I do also read sometimes. (Sorry about my bad writing explaning lol)

It's good to have a basis (what you learn when studying a language in school) then practice by reading, watching shows and talk with people.
