I totally get where you're coming from. It really is frustrating when the villain is portrayed as incompetent just to make the hero look better. It's like the story hits a point where they just hand the villain the idiot ball so the hero can win easily, and it feels so forced and unsatisfying.

It’s not uncommon for people to overlook the hero’s flaws while focusing on the villain’s, which can be pretty aggravating. It’s not about wanting villains to be better or worse to me it’s about wanting them to be interesting and competent, and not just plot devices for the hero to defeat.

I just had a pair of memories. I hope I didn't say it here already.

In the dark ages, when I was going to college, I took a few electives in writing. And this just popped back into old brain.
First, a DISCLAIMER = This was ONE teacher in ONE college. I'm not saying it's true. But I heard it from a... "pro"-ish. The quote:

"Don't make smart characters. People get irritated at seeing or watching someone than them. When the reader or viewer is smarter than the characters, they feel good about themselves, enjoy your product, and tell everyone else about it so they can buy it."

This triggered my second memory. A friend / frenemy a few decades ago said:
"I hate Babylon 5. Everyone there is smarter than me. I hate that. I'm not going to watch that show. I'll go watch Simpsons. I'm definitely smarter than Homer."

(I whispered : "Debatable..." but that's other story).

I'm hoping that they're both wrong... BUT... it might explain the "write dumb characters" trend that we have now. They're follower that teacher's advice.

I'm just trying to assign logic to madness. There's that too.

That is one of the reason Isekai, Regression and Reincarnation Manga, Manwha and even Manhua got so main stream.
Generic MC with little background who is a ordinary with ordinary everyday problems gets power and just succeeds.
Escapism fantasy is a big pull generally. Also most of the time smart characters are not really written smart everyone around him is just dumber.
A character can only be as smart as the author in most cases. Still hate those Character is smart because he is smart skip proof and solution here he solved the problem.

I don't like doing that because it common for me to mess up and go back to previous version, but I also forget saving as a copy, so I lost it either way. Hahaha
But the program I was using avtually had saved a backup, so I didn't lost my work!

Nice that you didn't lost everything, but have a look if its possible to have a history of your work, it would help a lot. This is way I have been using Google Docs for some documents.
