Hello ChuckleHeads,
I missed most of the conversation on VHS,VCR and other whatnots. Yeah I'm old and remember all that and actually have a VCR/DVD player hooked up to a 24" tv today. I think the TV is older than VCR. all still works. Anyway I remember the TV we had growing up was a 17" color. I specify color cause Black and white TVs were still an option... The Good Old days...

I remember watching Tv in my grandma's home... with an embers' bucket under the table(according the her, electric heaters were dangerous and could burn the table's cloth, unlike, you know, wood on fire ), and it was black and white with a dial to fine tune the channels when you switched.
It was indeed the old days. Did you ever had a beta video? those were short lived.

Disclaimer: I have a bias = I love villains winning / heroes losing.

As such, with extreme respect, I'm on the opposite boat.
I personally hate: Hey let's pretend that the villain is powerful, a threat to the hero. Then the villain does OMG stupid choices and goes out like a punk.
Stories where everything going to shit for the MC / hero seems like a refreshing take rather than the 99% (or feels like it) "Here's how the hero is going to win." story.

Again, with respect, you like what you like. Me? It took me about a half a century but I see the lie of "The villain is tough and smart." in most stories.
But, I'll admit, heroes winning make more bank than heroes losing. Anime or Live action. Still, false hope + goes to shit seems like something I'd watch.

Without the villain winning from time to time, which is almost only in horror movies, they are never a true threat to the *hero*

The avengers movie where Thanos snapped and they lost is my favorite one because it sets up a heroes comeback (which was done terribly)

Movies always start with villains being smart and getting dumber/weaker as the mo is goes on

Beta, no, My school had Beta-VCR-TV all hooked together on a huge cart, (probably weighed more than my car does), that thing was wheeled from class to class. took 2 people to push that F-ing thing around. I think DVDs were almost out before my dad got us a vcr at home

@Dubbleu .... As someone older than that, I can tell you that technically a "VCR" could be a VHS VCR or a Betamax VCR...

Kinda got lost after VHS won the war. Used to have to specify.

But I agree that not knowing VCR is what you play the magnetic tapes in is quite aging.

Yeah, my dad had a lot of video players, including the betamax and laserdisc. Most of the laserdisc stuff was looney tunes. I remember he paid a fuckton of money for them. He set up two VCR and rented like 3 movies at a time and recorded from one to the other.

We ended up having hundreds of recorded movies, that I ended up watching all through my childhood. He also recorded a lot of movies on the OG HBO with that awesome intro.

I grew up watching pirated VHS tapes that my dad gave to me. I had boxes and more boxes of those VHS in those white cases and with the handwritten labels.

Sony also lost on the Memory Stick. I remember having to buy it to use on the PSP. Still have some, and neve had any other device that was compatible with that...

I'm not a tax expert(I was going to say I'm not a taxologist, but unfortunately that word actually exist ), but don't USA citizens(also know as Statians) have to pay taxes?
Yes, the federal tax % they pay is lower than in other countries, but they also have to pay state taxes which, even though they are lower, raise the total to roughly the same as the ones in countries with free healthcare.
I think in some states the taxes were higher than in the UK, which has absurdly high taxes close to 50% or something for high income earners(125k+).
But the most important thing is that you don't need a gofundme each time you get a cough

Many states don't have state tax. My state, Texas is one of them. There's property tax though, which can be substantial, depending on property value of course.

And, state taxes over some limit can be deducted from the federal tax. Some states sort of exploit this by raising state taxes and thus pass the increase over to the federal US. The taxpayers in that state doesn't see much of a change.

The US tax code is also extremely progressive, much more so than in Europe.
The bottom 50% earners pay pretty much no tax, the majority get a refund for taxes they didn't pay.
The top 1% earners pay 46% of the total taxes, the top 10% pay 76%

I've lived in Europe, now I live in Texas. I make a good living, but the taxes here are so much lower that it boggles the mind. My standard of living is way higher than it was in the richest country in Europe. And that's with only one income now as opposed to two back there.

I think it's porn.. I don't have any objections to it.
I'd still rather have people painting the art, and use the AI as the brush.
The only issue is that it has to "steal" to learn how to create.

My main issue with AI porn is just that it's usually low quality. Not so much in the individual images, but it's hard to get two generated images to be consistent with one another in terms of background, clothing etc, and hardly anyone even tries to have AI porn with two characters actually interacting with each other in the shot.
I don't think training is really stealing, it could be copyright infringement but if people are putting their art out with an open license they can't really complain that people use it for something other than looking at.

I don't care about the romance I wish Banri fell to the bridge again or something.
If only it was truck-kun he would have finished the job properly.

In a good heroic story everything should be going to shit for the hero for most of it. That's why people like Empire Strikes Back, because seeing Luke get beaten over and over makes people want to see him win in the next movie (unfortunately the next movie had Ewoks, but at least the scenes on the Death Star were good). The problem is that there are a lot of bad writers out there who are getting big budget jobs for "some reason" (politics are disallowed on this site ) who can only write about heroes that were powerful all along, and are too stupid to write smart villains.

You can have good stories where the villains win, but unless it's a comedy that's a pretty big downer for the audience. Like, nobody comes away from reading 1984 feeling optimistic about the future.
