Should be able to protect the physical media, though. That's why CD and DVD rot is bad, there's nothing to protect from it as far as I've seen.
My CDs that have gone bad have been in zippered cases and jeweled cases.

It's been years since I tried a CD or DVD, so I don't know how mine are. I didn't even know of this!
But I remember that with scratching most DVDs that weren't read by their respective devices could still be copied with a computer because it didn't need to be read in real time.
This saved me lots of times during the PS2 era.

I'll take soft. Crispy is nice, but way more times than I'd like it wasn't crispy, it was fucking hard, like a rock.

The ideal is using a reliable cloud service or having multiple HDs in a raid architecture, but both cost money that I don't have. Hahaha
