last time i watched something with night deals, i ended up watching round 6

Kinda off-topic, but I consider myself "nerdy", and yet I've never read nor watched LotR... I did read Hobbit, but didn't like it, so I kinda didn't feel like reading more Tolkien.

Yeah, I can agree when the game suddenly shifts direction, but sometimes the clearly states what is planned and people are still mad about it...
This reminds in a way of a piece of banter dialogue between Varric and Cassandra from DragonAge Inquisiton;

  • Cassandra: Varric, how could you let the Knight-Captain be framed for murder?
  • Varric: Well, I did spent three entire chapters setting it up.
  • Cassandra: But she didn't deserve it! You'd already put her through more than enough!
  • Varric: Look, Seeker, if you love a character, you give them pain, ruin their lives, make them suffer. Maybe even throw in a heroic death.
  • Cassandra: That makes no sense!
  • Varric: You care enough to argue. If she had a nice afternoon and took a nap, you'd stop reading.
Ultimately I think it's okay for fans/players/readers to complain about creative decisions an author/creator of a story makes, but I believe that the creator should stick to their guns as to their vision for the story, and the above kind of explains why quite beautifully I think.

Man, i wish i could get excited for anything Star Wars these days...
For myself, I think I've figured out a different way to say it:

I no longer love Star Wars.
I no longer hate Star Wars.
It's just... there.

I'll watch it if I've caught up with what I usually watch. Or if my game(s) is at a good stopping point and I want something else to do.
But it's neither the event, nor the disgust that certain kinds of entertainment brought out of me.
It's now "Nothin' to do. Well... guess I'll watch some new Star Wars content or somethin'."

LotR movies and books are great, even though the books can be a bit tiring.
Would highly recommend giving it a try, at least on the first LotR movie. Even if you don't enjoy the story, everything else is so well made that it's really a delight to watch.

But read the books first so you can complain about the differences, That's like movie watching 101...
