That wave movement is amazing! Totally puts my little game to shame. Here's a snippet for those interested:



Can consider this to be the "Overworld Map" or, in Dwarf Fortress terms, this is similar to picking where you "Embark" to. A very high level map. Can see Forests (F) but not individual trees.
The X is the Player.
L for Basic Land.
M for Mountains
F for Forest
W for Water
Pale Yellowish S for Sand (only by water edge usually)
Green S for Swamp (between forest and water usually)

Edit: I should also add, this is showing hte South East section of the map (you can tell from the Water all around the botton and the right). I generate Islands to limit the player from going too far. Theres 9 of these sections in total. Technically the map editor can take any value you put in, but I standardise it to 9 sections anyway as it feels neater.

Also you should check out CDDA since it's open source so you can crawl through it. That coupled with it being extremely intricate and polished as well as having a metric ton of mods makes it potentially useful to reference.

Also you should check out CDDA since it's open source so you can crawl through it. That coupled with it being extremely intricate and polished as well as having a metric ton of mods makes it potentially useful to reference.

Ohhhhh this looks awesome! Just given it a google. Definitely adding it to my list of things to give a try.

Well, yeah, you should play it TOO! It's awesome. Been developed by the community for ages.

But since you talked about sprites over ascii it reminded me of cdda, as that game does exactly that. The base version is in ascii and there's quite a few mods that change every symbol/group of symbols to sprites.

And again, it's completely open source so you can sift through the code and see how everything's done!

Edit: apparently there's a paid steam version these days. I'm not talking about that.
