I don't think it's older developer. A lot of the ones that are visible and are talking actually get gamers. You can see that, for instance, in the youtube videos from Mark Darrah (former bioware). It's the publishers that have no incentive to risk anything, when they can make much more profit by playing it safe & relying on marketing & hype to sell a cat in the bag.Many companies have old farts that don't get videogames, and yet make decisions about videogames. So they just want the safest option, with the lesser risk and higher profits. This sucks very, very much.
But on that point is what I think Nintendo really shine through. Despite their flaws (which aren't few), you can see there's passion on their games (at least most of them), and they're not afraid of coming up with weird ideas.
There isn't a lot of big companies that still has this mindset, usually it's just indie studios and such.
