I believe there's no such thing as "new". No new stories, no new ideas, nothing is new. You have random occurrences that are observed and reliably recreated, mutations and extrapolations of existing stuff, but nothing is original. What is likely the most iconic scene in Akira, where the main character Kaneda comes to a stop on his motorcycle by turning hard and almost laying it over in a power slide while looking over his shoulder has been recreated a hundred times. It was based on a single panel in the Manga that inspired the movie. That picture was based on the artist watching people on motorcycles and trying to draw the action in a dramatic way.Anyone would like a movie based on akira anime?
So hell yeah, do a live action, do a CGI, do a mechanically taught AI dream sequence after forcing it to watch Akira and 20 other SciFi ten thousand times. While I don't like most the books made into movies, remakes, or sequels, you do occasionally get a Terminator 2, Harry Potter, or just something that inspires like the Akira power-slide.
