I know, they also don't have Umlauts like ÄÜÖ äüö and the german keybord has the Y and Z switched, because the Z is way more common then the Y.

Also the ß is not a B, but a sz or double-s. Its a sharp-s like in "hiss" . But nobody will be actually annoyed if somone doesn't use it and turns it into a ss.

Well, to us it looks like a "big, weird capital B." Like those 17th century non-capital Ss used in English look like weird elongated fs.

Well, to us it looks like a "big, weird capital B." Like those 17th century non-capital Ss used in English look like weird elongated fs.

You are actually pretty close. While most letters evolved out of that style, the ß never really did, all that happend that it got merged into one symbol (It was ſs and ſz) and lost it's sharp edges.

Up until only recently (2017) the ß wasn't even allowed ot be uses while writing capitalized, because it does not have a capitalized version. So "Straße" (street) was STRASSE and now it can be STRAßE. This does inded make a difference, because a double letter means that the preceding vowel is pronounced quickly, which is not the case with an ß. Of course in addition to the fact that ß is pronounced sharply.
