A proper book? no, but fanfics or original smut posted on ao3 and such is good enough for me so basically the same thing...
but if I'm reading smut fanfiction I do look for some rule34 of the characters to help visualize it.
I can visualize sex and fight scenes well enough if they are well written (Not even necessarily good, it's more about the flow of the writing) but having some visual reference beforehand helps a lot, hence why light novels and such have the covers and intermittent drawings of the characters.
