They got rid of all the filler episodes of the original. From what I can remember, the story is closer to the manga.

Ranma last aired 35 years ago. There's plenty of people who've never seen the original and won't touch older anime even if the source materiel is good.

And honestly, a lot of older anime is pretty heavy on budget scenes.
