but it also seems unfair to pull everything in the theme into a separate category. Today, someone can win across categories, but if they follow the theme, they'd only get one win.

I hadn't considered that, that would be kind of unfair. Thanks for putting these together, I think it's really helping drive engagment in the other areas of the site! I will try to think of some fun themes to add to the ever growing list I'm sure you have.... has anyone suggested time eras yet? Like say the '80's?
