If the story is good, I think whether it has animations or not is irrelevant. I've played great games and they didn't have any animation. For exemple Good Girl Gone Bad.

Depends on the game and how well things are done.
Akaburs Witch Trainer had animation for the sprites and still images for the smut, and it did very well.
Meantime, there's dozens of games that try to be fully animated and fail miserably.

I prefer still images. Animations are usually just not that great in quality and take the devs a long time to create and render. I'd prefer that much more in plot and images than animation.

Almost always prefer animated poses, doesn't have to be much animation either. I think Nekopara does a good job with the idle animation of their characters.
