Has anyone else noticed a theme with all of the top games? I was playing with the filters today and realized 100%+ all the top rated games are similar, yet most of the new games coming out are different and frankly not as good (in my opinion). There are SOME good ones, not trying to throw shade, but wouldn't you think the dev's would want a successful game? Why try reinventing the wheel, we know what works.

70% of the games probably have Incest Tag in then
Also NTR (That i can't understand all the hate it gets)
And one of the things that is a dealbreaker for me, is RPGM games, these can rot in hell flames
I have played a few RPGM games that are good, but I get you.

RPGM I think has way lower lows but the highs are pretty good if you can find them
The highs are pretty good indeed, but they're often buried so deep in shit that even attempting to find them becomes way more hassle than it's worth it, unless you know specifically what you're looking for and bypass all the looking around part

Almost all RPGM games come from Japan, so if you're not in hentai/anime, you probably won't like most of them.

Advocating for "just make a good game" is hilarious.

It's survivorship bias.
The popular games are popular because they're good. You never saw most of the ones that didn't make it.

For aspiring game makers, I can imagine that avoiding being like the popular games is the point. Nobody wants to drown in the wake of the big ones.

That isn't to say that people don't try. Going after players who want "more of X" is a tried and true tradition.
They just also have the same uphill battle every game maker does: Making something good is hard.

There are certainly trends among tags/ flavors but I think that's the tail of the dog and they're being walked by a bunch of competing factors (regulation/ pressure campaigns/ optics/ money/ novelty/ nostalgia/ authenticity/ resources/ etc)

It is more the never ending complexities with RPGM games. Simple tasks and small maps are where they shine. I cannot tell you how many RPGM games I quit because I missed some of the direction and there was no quest tab so I would be forced to talk to everyone and click on everything.

Well said and I don't disagree.
