Legacy Attachment System Corruption – Partial Recovery and Archive Release

Los Vegas has it on the board for the next crash if anyone wants to put their money down on it

I'm poor so i wont be betting

glad to see the problem found, thanks for all your hard work.

I have some technical questions if I may.

What was the cause? Corruption of the MBR, faulty/erroring disk, some system service that somehow wrote to boot, a faulty update?
Or was it just one of these weird things sometimes happening with some really long running servers that they just seem to wait until system shutdown/reseat to manifest the problem. Could the boot partition already have been damaged for a while? Since these files there are usually loaded into ram from the bootloader, the damage could have originated ever since the last reseat.

What actually caused this? Was it the crash?

If the hash changed, that usually means the data changed. So how is it possible the attachments still exist, but the files have different bits? Was it a distributed file system? Is XFs hash reliant on the exact metadata (creation date and modification date)?

Basically the same question as in the point before with addition, is this because of metadata/encoding of the file metadreplies

Does this mean this goes only for the attachment part of the forum, or the whole forum content, like threads and replies?

How did you guys actually do it in the end? Simple copy of the root dir? Since it was obviously no full file backup, and why was this data missed? Was the normal data also effected by the partition corruption?

Anyway, all in all still good job. And happy to hear some news. Just wanted to ask, since these were questions I had while reading :)
I think it all comes down to integrity and compatibility issues with all the changes being made. I and a few others warned months ago this was going to happen, but they pushed forward at warp speed anyway. They seriously need to stop doing all this on the production servers and test these changes on a home system by someone that fully understands this at a fundamental level. I used to manage a sub-cluster and intranet server environment for about 2,000 users and I would never in a million years upgrade anything until it was tested and retested a dozen times. When you have a few million dollars on the line per week you kinda don't want to f**k things up. I think they got captured by the cool factor tbh.

Yeah some kind of home lab for testing would be the right move, or just having solid backup systems, with daily, weekly or bi weekly backups or a RAID configuration. This is I think what surprises me the most, since this is pretty standard.

I have implemented this now for the new server.

Honestly, I only come here for the game links. I don't care much about the forum, so as long as the games continue to get uploaded thanks to all the volunteers, I'm fine with whatever is easier for the devs to do.

Honestly the no BS answer is yet again this place seems to be unable to remain stable for more than like 3 days at a time before some catastrophic thing happening to it.

Its to the point here I'm surprised if I log into the site and see shit actually working.

servers been fucked well beyond me upgrading the server to 2.3, as i stated a long time ago the server is crumbling because i did not know how to install shit on it.

Well a working raid1 configuration will be 100% better than whatever was in place before. Would still recommend some kind of extra backup, can be heavily compressed, which is stored in another physical location.
Thanks for the update.

there will be 3 backups, on a off site host, on a backup server i run and on raid1

Welp. People are people.

Me? I put this site on par with City of Heroes Homecoming, a fan website (2 years ago got a licence!?) hosted by, you know, people.

AFAIK, no one here or there are getting paid. They're doing this on their time off. We get what we pay for. I'm not gonna compare this to any pro or pro-am sites.

Do I bitch about stuff, including this site? Yeah. I also bitch about the rain. Makes me feel better but I don't expect change. Here? It's just people doing their best.
And I'll keep supporting and bitching, hopefully Support > Bitch.
Anyhow, good luck with the transfer / new server. That's all my luddite brain got from the posted information.

My vote is to save the games and videos. Let the future guide the path.

We already know about the 90% broken images on the latest updates page. My question is why does all the images break when you guys make a forced post and how come it does not notify us on the latest updates page when a required post is necessary?

almost all videos/images/gifs are broken and perm lost on lewdcorner, not just LU.

Understood. What I mean is. Whenever there is a required post (even before the images were noticeably broken) It would show all images broken until I read the required post. Instead of redirecting me to the required post page. So I have to go to the lewdcorner homepage to see the required post. Then the images are restored on latest updates page. Nowadays its only a few.

Sorry if i am making it confusing.

When the archive is posted, I'll try to find all my stuff and reupload it.

It appears that a lot of my stuff remains as thumbnails. Full images don't load. Some of it I have scrubbed, so if it isn't in the archive, it is gone forever.

I imagine the hardest hit sections are probably the images and clips in the AI P4-5 area. Just about every post on every thread there was uploaded as attachments irrc. Sure, losing an incest patch or whatever that was never put in the OP sucks but losing blonde and ginger lolis doing lewd thinks to their daddy while he's asleep sucks harder.
Indeed, a Curious Question that has Been Both Burden and Boon to Lewdists the world over, Whether they be Living Large the Loli-Life or Struggling to String Cardboard Cutouts in Impractical Positions In Nominal Hopes of a Moistened Dream- all but the Lucky Few suffer to answer this most Fun-damental question:
- Which does suck harder, the Blondie or the Ginger?

Moving on to more serious notes, I, like many have here I'm sure, possess burgeoning drives boasting bounty both Magnificent & Mundane, 'But Guaranteed 100% Site-Appropriate, or Your Money Back!
Which would, of course, be Nil, as I'm not a Ponce and would not accept a Pence for bit or byte.

Is there a donation station planned? Or perhaps a better, easier to manage option- those of us so willing and able inventory our goodies, gawdies, and lawdies-help-me-jeebus! in a format easily interpreted and accessible to All Ye Lewd Powers That Be, and you let us know, ahem... When & Where to Stick It!

It, of course, being the materials you would denote upon said inventory reply.... In case that was not obvious.... What did you think I was referring to, my pet goat? His name is Eyelash, spelt B-I-L-L-Y, not 'it'.... But, uh, Yeah, please let us know. Despite our rather random behavior, we're quite serious about serious things, and a community suffering such loss is serious indeed.

(Did you notice Did you notice? How I so casually ended on the same word wince i was hence? Oh Joy!)
