Possibly for women with larger boobs. Apparently they weren't the torture devices we've been told and actually helped with back support. Probably used already at renaissance fairs and such.
I feel like bras are the logical evolution of corsets. Corsets did also shape waists and force posture, and there is some shapewear that still does this, but the comfort of bras is still generally greater than those, so they are more widely used. Generally clothing has trended towards less restrictive over time, and I don't know that I see that trend reversing.
It's interesting to look at the similarities between a corset and a scoliosis brace. That being said, wearing a corset long-term is actually potentially harmful due to the weakening of muscle groups such as the abs.
A lot of info on harm caused by corsets came from bra manufacturers. I'm not saying they're perfect, but I do think we could see a return; Not fully mainstream, more like occasional, but unsurprising
That's really interesting! You have sent me into a rabbit hole of trying to understand the funding of corset studies and learning how media has accepted all corsets as equally harmful.
Probably not in the ways they used to be. I think you'll be seeing a lot more as accessories rather than being functional.
