Considering that ALL colors are somewhere on the RGB color chart. The red, green and blue use 8 bits each, which have integer values from 0 to 255. This makes 256*256*256=16777216 possible colors. In other words if a "scientist" says he found a new color -- he is gas lighting you.

Except that's not necessarily true. The world we live in is not digital. There are thus infinitely many colors. We obviously can't distinguish them with our eyes, but they are possible. As for 16777216, you can say that's the number of colors the RGB system can represent, but not that it is the absolute number of colors.
