I'm wondering if anyone has found games on here that have pretty good writing and is worth playing for that alone. I've got a few ideas of stories floating about too. I don't think I'm creative enough to put it into animation though.

Absolutely. For me, the most important things are a good story, well thought out characters, and good gameplay. Unfortunately, there are not as many games that combine all these qualities as I would like.

When you lean too heavily on story at the expense of gameplay, you're just reading. Sure, story matters, but for me, a mediocre story can be forgiven if the gameplay is good. I've played lots of "regular" games where the gameplay is great but doesn't rely heavily on story and they've been a lot of fun. The thing for me with VNs is that without gameplay, the story HAS to be good. So to answer the question, I probably wouldn't call a game that ONLY has good writing to even be a game anymore, but stories can have their place. I've passed a few hours on Dumb Koala and there's no gameplay at all with them.

Agree on every point there. I think the hardest part for most devs is to realise that as a visual art the show it don't tell maxime really applies.

Yes, but rarely is that level of polish achieved in adult games achieved. One of the games that comes to mind for me is Eternum (If you haven't played it you should). I think for most people having good art/animations in a porn game is the priority while having a good story is a secondary thing,, having both puts you up there. Just look at 95's highest rated games (I think majority deserves their spot up there even if I may not like it)

PS: Even then, a good story have many tiers but people are not dumb and can see the effort put into the game when played.

This is just my opinion so it might differ for others

Not if that means no sex scenes on any of the sort of games here. There's more than enough and they are boring. Also, if there's no choices at all (or that bullshit where there's 1 "choice") it isn't a game at al.

Well, if a game is an amazing surprise qwith good writting and nice mechanics (can't be only a good VN for me, it needs gameplay) then yes i'd play it... But since we're here for other kind of games, i'm afraid that's not what we're looking for when we lurk around.

So... It needs some brave 1st players giving good reviews so i'd give it a try if nothing hot in it.

For most games sure, I need a story to play it
But for games with spicy content like most on this site i need some context as to what's happening
I don't want to jump into a game for just spiciness, if I wanted that I'd just watch videos

Yes a good story can carry a game but there isn't many games that this would apply to.

Put it this way- the major elements in most adult games are the story and the visuals (and only sometimes gameplay, because we're mostly talking VNs). If all I wanted was the visuals I'd just download a gallery rip. Or forget it entirely and go to Pornhub. It's the story that makes everything else worthwhile.

I'd definitely play a game for the sake of the story, but even in that there's factors like the quality of the writing itself and pacing.

I hardly consider VNs to be games, properly speaking. Honestly I wish there was a separate section for VNs.

I played lona rpg recently and there is a really decent dramatic story so I just read all the dialogues and things. That game just got majority of my day time. Started at 13:00 and ended up "waking from gameplay" at 19:00. Then again and again for like 5 days in row. really enjoyed.

Once in a Lifetime and Eternum.

These two are top of my list so far and I've been doing this a long time.

I greatly enjoyed Evenicle's story too, though some said it was too grindy I didn't feel I was grinding at all but honestly just enjoyed the simple jrpg mechanics of the game. Nearly did 100% completion of this (somewhere in the top half the 90 percent range) when I quit. Haven't made it around to the sequel.

If you want a little less lewd and more story though, there some story heavy af games out there that can murder you with lore, monologues, and just plain fucking text walls.

There are a few games that I follow mainly for the story. For example, Eternum . And in general, if the game doesn't have an intriguing / compelling story, the game wont be enjoyable for me.

Actually, i think all the things are important, but for me mayne the designer, and if is interesting, the story, bc maybe one game had a nice story, but if the design are... meh.. i dont play it

Story and mechanics, the other elements are flavor to it. Gaming is always the first purpose, otherwise there are other means to scratch the crave.

I bought and played all of Paradise Lust just because I enjoyed how stupid the story was. I love visual novel point and click type games.

I will say alot of the time I will. There are alot of games that are instant gratification or there are mods to help with that. I like the chase and the build up better.
