Has any one else noticed this sort of "recession" when it comes to porn games?

I would say that the quality of game development/speed started sometime before 2017, with games such as Summer Time Saga, Milfy City, DILF, Dreams of Desire, and much much more spawning into the scene for our dicks' enjoyment.
But I feel that ever since the summer of 2023, the development/progress of porn games has dropped significantly. I understand that there are still games being made/develop, but they all lack in quality, have a huge 'Time to Update' (ToU), or just straight-up been abandoned.

Am I just being spoiled, or does anyone else feel this?

I feel like that is simply a result of the sheer expansion of the porn game market. There is a lot of competition, few games getting the spotlight, those which do are held to a higher level of scrutiny (even if it is a porn game)

Can't say for sure since I wasn't there (and I'm no hentai game historian), but there's definitely a lot of slop. Some days I check game updates and find entire pages of crappy AI games and I can't help but wonder who's downloading these. In any case, game creation tools are more accessible than ever, which means more people are trying them out. That's good in my opinion, but it means a lot of version 0.000001 version games which often never get updated. It's always possible 2017 was a similar case, except now we only remember the games that went somewhere.

Yeah, I think this is a big part of it. AI means the minimum skill floor to make a game has drastically dropped. Lots of games get made, and some of them are genuinely good games that the dev is finally able to make because the only thing they lacked before was art skills, but a whole lot of them can really only be described as slop.

I agree that the overall, average quality of the 2018-2022 projects was higher.

And some of them were safely completed and found their grateful fans. But this did not prevent the degradation of some of the initially promising projects (for me personally, such things as Summertime Saga, Taffy Tales and Reunion simply died - I stopped following their development a long time ago). In addition, the production of games and VN was put on the conveyor belt, hence a lot of clichés, standard plot moves, the same type of characters, which could not but affect the level of new projects. I never download a new game before at least 3-4 updates - too much risk that the developer will abandon the game after 2-3 updates. In general, the number of abandoned projects is depressing. Some developers, working with their projects since 2017-18, just do not know what to do next, how to develop the plot, it is obvious that they started work without having a well-thought-out storyline in their head (as an example - Ring of Lust). And I'm not talking about games with (pseudo)Japanese graphics - I'm not interested in them for aesthetic reasons.

I agree. It's like a sports league going from 20 to 1,000 teams in one year. You also have those out for a quick buck and those who are just "trying it out" that may start with just a partial story idea which goes nowhere. There may be some who found it to be harder than they expected and gave up.

I feel like AI generation is really adding a lot to the space. Hopefully we can see more of that as one person can write. design and make the art for a game.

Well, you also have to take into account that during the pandemic most everybody was stuck at home so that allowed a ton of games to be developed and for some to be completed but now that almost everybody is back to their respective offices/work is why a big majority of the games have fallen off in recent years and it seems that it's only getting worse.

Tell me about it especially with so many using AI nowadays now don't get me wrong there's some really good AI games out there but c'mon variety is the spice of life not every game needs to be made with AI.

I wouldn't say that Milfy City or Dreams of Desire have a great quality, particularly regarding the writing/story. There are lots of good games currently in the development. I don't see a problem. The only problem is the number of loli games has declined significantly after Westygate and purges of the platforms by the payment provcessors like Visa/Mastercard.

A lot of the older makers probably got new jobs or moved on and with education and the economy being as bad as it is these days there are probably fewer and fewer to replace them. Also Google searches now suck due to payed content getting top ranks rather than the best search results making it harder to find places to post.

i think this is survivorship bias mixed with the influx of ai slop, theres still plenty of great games out there and new ones springing up fairly often but with all the new tools we have its foolish to think we won't we have a year better than 2017 if you do see that as our peak in porn games

from what I've read over on F95 he's taken a step back after losing some donor sites cause of the content he makes.

Game quality in my opinion peaked before and during the pandemic. Probably had a lot more time on their hands. Now it seems like we wait months for an update that adds a few hundred words and a CG or two. Taht along with ai becoming more prevalent in games made people just churn out slop for a quick buck. More then likley discourage those who put in time just to be less popiular then AI incest game #56.
