Played both before modding was so widespread so I have to ask, does it compensates to play them again with mods? I remember them vaguely and don't know if I would play them again.

For morrowind it's worth modding, there are plenty mods that expand on the game.
Tamerial rebuilt is releasing a new update for their mod in may, which expands the map and includes the mainland of morrowind too.
