I was told I 'lacked enthusiasm' when I was new at an early job because I tended to finish all my work early, walk around to try to help other colleagues, and when there was nothing to do I would wait for new work to come in. One lesson you learn at work is to do your work in the a lotted time if you can't leave early once you are done.
When they see you free they might assign you more work for same pay and still unlikely to get promoted.

I'm a firm believer in getting paid for what you do. If what they offered is what a day's work is supposed to be, I see no point in doing more for nothing. I guess if you're paid hourly it's fine, but otherwise there's literally no reason for them to expect that.

I'm a firm believer in getting paid for what you do. If what they offered is what a day's work is supposed to be, I see no point in doing more for nothing. I guess if you're paid hourly it's fine, but otherwise there's literally no reason for them to expect that.

The issue is that employers often abuse the hourly wage system, since its creation it should only be used for activities in which productivity can not be measured. If your work can be measured and you get paid based on time then they have to set a quota system or you are getting robed.
Time employee = security guard, chef, secretary, etc since overall you need to be available for activities than may or may not be required then the contract is set on time spent inside the workplace.
Production employee = factory worker, farmworker etc you get paid based on work provided/crops collected/shoes made/etc
