As disappointed as I am that Whedon decided to cap off the story the way he did, Serenity is still a good movie and I still tear up when I hear River's "..my turn"

Supposedly there was a second season planned -- Inara's terminal illness was the reason she gave up trying to become house priestess and left house Medrasa to see as much of the 'verse as she could before she died -- but we never got that far Between her, Kaylee and River , it was hard deciding who to beam up with.

His ideas may be born from years of religious indoctrination but they're still his ideas. They are still a part of him and if you love him (friend or otherwise) then you need to accept that as is, even if you hope for it to change at some point.

Change is a gradual thing. Change that involves deeply embedded shit like this? Even moreso.

Wanting to force a change just screams that you care about an imagined version of this person rather than the actual person, and that isn't healthy for anyone.

Continue down this forceful road and you will most likely just destroy your relationship and negatively influence both of your lives.

Consider this: Are they aware of who you are, including your sexuality? (given that's your concern here) - If they are, and they accept you anyway, then they obviously care more about you than any "programming" already.

Let that blossom naturally and see where it leads. Trying to push something like this never ends well, at least in my experience.

So far I just tried to teach him to "live and let live" and have been pretty respectful of his beliefs. We do have a mentor/student relationship (I was literally his teacher at one point) so he comes to me for advice a lot.
Never have I given him the long "god is dead talk" or anything more like "dude, you do you, and let others do the same". But yeah, I feel you, probably should just leave him to his own devices and learn through experience.
