I'd add that I am also unhappy with games filled with too many and too forgettable characters. I want games with actual characters that I can care about.

I'd say story is very important because it's the buildup that we're looking for in VNs.
So a good story is what wake us enjoy the scenes the most. Otherwise we should go to better animations in videos / small loops.
So a good story with meh scenes and barely no animation is still good since good animations with terrible story is barely enjoyable to me.

The best examples i have in mind are Flowers and The train window and Flowers wich i'm not fan of the art, but the narration suits me very well and so they're notable games for me.

But even a very good story with crappy scene and zero animation, i suppose i can't appreciate it.

Well, when the story of the game is boring I do that crazy thing of skipping it but when it has an interesting story I read it that's why I say 50/50.
If the game is very boring and not much of a scene, I won't install it again.

Yeah, I feel plot is important. I wouldn't say it's more important than the actual sex as nothing makes me want to skip the story more than when it drags on for way too long and all I want is the sex. But a bad story can definitely ruin a game. There have definitely been a few cringe games where the dev didn't know how to naturally form a relationship and so just made it to where the girl finds every dumb thing the protag says to be the most charismatic thing ever.

I love games like Eternum or My Bully is my Lover, which have a wonderful plot that draws you in and just occasionally, in their own time, regale you with sex scenes that fit into this plot.

I love games like The Headmaster or Solvalley School, that are first and foremost about the sex and do it particularly well, and have a plot that is just good enough to serve this purpose well.

I love games like Pale Carnations or Now & Then, that are perfectly balanced between "adult visual" and "visual novel" and excellent in both categories.

I even love games like The Lécuyer Cult or Jeijei's Harem, that while just barely passable in either category, ooze with originality.

Nothing wrong with variety. Nothing wrong with choice between very diverse works in the genre -- be they literature, pornography, pornographic art, or experimental.

Porn with plot is great and super popular in my opinion, say what you will but I think Game of Thrones is porn with plot.

Oftentimes the plot is what makes the porn great, and without it there's just not as much going for it. Imagine Eternum without the incredible plot and lovable characters, it's just the best rendering ever done with HS2 (bad example but you know what I mean, good writing can elevate even already good work)

if you watch the 70's and 80's porn the stories were so bad... and the set the tone for fastforwarding to good bits, but you werent buying those videos for story let face it.
and videos cost lots more if you have story and have to pay people that can actualy act.
so with virtual game, novels, storyboards the game that is no longer an issue.
I think your right that the build up is the key and was probably what everyone wanted, in back in the early porn era!

The part I love about this particular argument, is how utterly non-existent support is. Tell anyone not on sites like these that you watch porn or play porn game for the story and they're like "Ooooohhhh reallly? U-huh, sure." But if I'm honest, the story is just as important to me if not moreso. Not only in these games, but also in actual porn. I hate your standard commercialized porn for this reason. The story isn't believable. It's either stupid, horribly acted, or both and I just can't. I'd prefer watch some random amateur only-fans model with no story than that. At least that has enough amature aspect to it that it's believably not "fake" for lack of a better word. But, I also know I'm a kind of minority because I have a few rants you may run across here. NTR hate and overly large body parts, to name a few.
