I use a VPN, but there are so many out there, some paid, some (supposedly) free. Which one - assuming that you are using one - do you use/prefer/recommend? Are you using one, but wish you had chosen a different one?

Not so many as you'd think. And a bunch seem kinda chummy with the chicoms - who are ofc happy to help people cover their tracks on the internet...

I am using Proton VPN. I remember Heisenberg talking about it once and so I decided to go with it. I have no complains.

Thank you for that link, e6mill. That's a real eye-opener, to put it mildly  Interestingly - an purely accidently - the two VPNs that appear to be genuinely independent are the two that I use: Nord and Proton (though only the freebee version). Operationally, I found Proton (the free version) to be a bit buggy, but since I wasn't paying anything I can't really complain. I've only recently started to use Nord, so I'll reserve judgement for now, though it is very easy to install and use.

As a matter of interest, are you using the paid or free version of Proton? I have been using the free version for a few years, but it doesn't always work the way it should.
Perhaps that's my punishment for being a tightwad :ROFLMAO:

I was using free version for a bit and when it worked well I bought a 1-year subscription. It works very well and I had a dubious pleasure of testing it today because dlsite just hid every game with "petite" tag for non-japanese users. I set vpn to japan and voila, games were searchable again.

Is there a VPN that is good and free?
I use the vpn extension called Urban Vpn but I cannot put the location of a city, example IP USA and Miami

If you care for privacy, DO NOT use "free" VPNs. The exception is Proton.

Mullvad works really well if you want high speeds with normal pricing (No 12 month+ subscriptions.), sadly they don't seem to rotate IPs very often so you will be blocked randomly on some sites but that's easily resolved by changing to another server.

I have always used NordVPN.
At the beginning the app was very buggy.
So I used it with manual configuration via openvpn.
But now it works perfectly.

The renewal is expensive
But if you don't have the automatic renewal enabled they usually, to make you stay,
send you an offer a little before your subscription expires
similar to what they do for new subscriptions.

Paid: NordVPN, SurfShark and Norton.
Free: Proton VPN

I've used them all, but the best one is definitely NordVPN.

I've heard Nord is good, but I'm interested if anyone has heard anything negative. I mean do they keep logs, etc?

NordVPN has a no logs policy. They claim it was reviewed by PWC and Deloitte a few times already. I have not yet found any trustworthy sources to the contrary.

Awesome, better than no reviews for sure.

According to NordVPN's own website:

"Protection from tracking"

"We don’t log your online activity, so what you do online is only your business. Need more privacy? Enable Threat Protection Pro™, and it will even block third-party trackers from following you around the internet."

TBH, so far, I have not seen any critical claims to the contrary. Operationally, I have found it very good and easy to use.

I've had problems with accessing shares on the local network when running the operating system client. The mistake might be on my on my side but I've also read online about others having the same problem with no solution. The browser plugins actually work like a charm.

I've got the browser plugin working now, very simple.

Currently have PIA, though my subscription is ending soon. might try proton next.
